I want to thank my family with JK Publishing for everything they do to help. Without them and the support from all of the authors, editors, and bosses, I wouldn’t be where I am today. The true friendships are what make this company on a whole different playing field than the rest.

Jess Buffett, once again, thank you for another amazing cover. You go above and beyond my expectations.

To Chloe Lang, thank you for writing that sexy as hell BDSM scene in Brothers of Wilde Nevada. You turned me on to the BDSM genre, and opened the door to new and creative things. That series will always be on my top ten favorites list!

Most of all, thank you to all of you for reading my work. Without you, I am nothing more than a mom with a laptop. <3

  Chapter One

Two months had passed since that night at the party, and things had only gone downhill since. Each time Vice was forced to interact with Dom, it had grown harder and harder, making her dread the deployment coming in just two days. The whole farm had been buzzing with blooming love and it made her want to barf.

This morning she had tried to avoid everyone like the plague, but it seemed the forces of Grey Skull were stacking against her. Now, here she was, stuck loading the damn truck in the blazing hot sun with none other than their fearless asshole leader himself.

“Vice, get your head out of your ass and get this shit tied up!” Dom snapped.

Vice fumed. She had been tying the damn tent poles and ammo boxes for the past three damn hours with him barking orders and had had just about enough. Standing up straight, she grasped the small of her back that was aching so bad she could scream and glared at him with daggers shooting from her eyes.

“I don’t know what the hell has crawled up in your ass and camped out but you best get it out before I knock it out.” Her fists doubled at her sides and her eyes narrowed, daring him to say something.

The corners of Dom’s lips tilted up into a cocky smirk. Slowly, he walked toward her, stalking like a prowling lion in that moment before it took down its prey. Her heart pounded against her chest, speeding with each step he took closer. Vice felt her stomach flip-flop, dropping into her toes as he came up, stopping only mere inches from her face. He had intentionally invaded her personal space, using the uncomfortable closeness to knock her bearings—and it worked. She could feel his breath casting against her face, seeping in her pores like a searing branding iron. His eyes roamed over her features, looking for her to falter. She tried to remain cold as stone and keep her feelings hidden but knew he could see straight through her act. When he grinned, her gut twisted. How the hell did one man turn her body into a walking pile of mash potatoes? She watched as his lips parted, seeming to be in slow motion. “I assure you, nothing is in my ass, but if you keep getting lippy I will stick a plug in yours and spank it until it’s a pretty pink.”

Vice’s jaw hit the ground. When she finally found her tongue, she was boiling. “Your threats don’t work on me, Dom. You should know that by now…and you made it perfectly clear where you stood the night after the party. So, unless you want to loose a vital body part, I suggest you back the fuck off.” Her lip curled over her teeth, giving in to the pent up hurt and anger she had been holding since that mouthwatering, panty-twisting kiss.

Dom took a step back, mimicking the same reaction he had when he stormed off that night and backtracked. “You’re right. You are my soldier. Nothing else. Take five and finish up here.” He spun on his heel and disappeared for the rest of the day.

  Dom had been kicking
himself in the ass since that night behind the barn. It had been hard to dismiss the feelings that came every time he was around the little hell cat, and despite knowing good damn and well he could never have her for multiple reasons, it didn’t stop the raging hard-on he kept each and every time she was near. He had almost lost it today, and it couldn’t ever happen again. With the deployment coming up, he needed to get his head in the damn game. So, like any rational human being, he stayed locked up in his cabin for the rest of the day going over plans and information—for the umpteenth time. When dinnertime rolled around, he knew it would be pointless to try to avoid going to the main house, so he put on his best poker face and headed out the door.

Dinnertime was always a huge deal at the MM Ranch or so it had been dubbed by everyone, meaning Military Mavericks. With Juju and Bud now living on the farm, meals were a chance for them all to come together as a family. The only team member who opted not to move was Pop and his wife who owned a home in town. They did join them all for Sunday dinner and visited regularly. The women didn’t voice it, but all were relieved given that Pop’s wife wasn’t one who played well with others. Her hoity toity attitude was polar opposite of the happy-go-lucky down-to-earth Pop. No one understood their connection. They were a true example of opposites attracting.

Mrs. Sanders took pride in taking care of the huge family, and wouldn’t stand for one to bail out on the family sit down meals. The only acceptable excuse was illness, and even then she found a way to include them by making them a bed on the couch.

Dom walked in and was overwhelmed by the delicious aroma of whatever Mrs. Sanders had prepared. The table was being set by a giggling Lizzy and Heather, while Skyler ran around chasing after Kodiak. He couldn’t resist sticking his foot out as Kodiak ran by, stumbling the big ol’ brute giving Skyler just enough time to close the distance and jump on his back. Kodiak swung him around, bringing laughter and squeals so loud Bella came in from the living room and scolded them both. Kodiak, still holding Skyler, sulked back into the front room with the others until dinner was ready. From the sounds that erupted after they were out of Bella’s sight, the party hadn’t stopped. He shook his head, laughing. “I swear Kodiak is more of a child than they are. What is that amazing smell?” He walked over to Mrs. Sanders who stood over a giant pot on the stove.

Mrs. Sanders grinned, dipping a ladle full and held it up to his mouth. “Homemade chili, corn bread, and strawberry cupcakes for dessert. The girls made them special, with rainbow sprinkles.” Her eyes sparkled with pride at the two little homemakers-in-training who were setting bowls of sour cream and cheese out. Dom ate the spoonful, trying to sneak another when she turned back and caught him.

She swatted his hand and confiscated her spoon back. “It’s delicious,” he pouted.

“Well, you can wait and eat all you want at dinner. Now shoo out of here so I can finish and tell everyone to wash up.” Even while she reprimanded him, her eyes shined with humor.

Dom dropped a kiss on her cheek. “Yes, ma’am.” He walked over toward the cupcakes on the counter and was stopped by Alaina before he ever got close.

“Oh no you don’t, mister. Go on.” Alaina laughed.

“Geeze, you women are harder than any drill sergeant I’ve ever known. Lizzy, make sure Uncle Dom gets an extra cupcake and I’ll get you both a bunny.” He winked at her, making both girls jump up and down. He couldn’t help but smile. He had never been around kids much until moving here, and they had grown on him and hit upon a soft spot he didn’t know he had. From tea parties to playing army with Sky, they brought out a side of Dom that shocked everyone. Thankfully, they all new better than to give him grief over it.

Dom plopped down on the couch beside Michael, who had the same disgruntled expression as he did. “Get kicked out?”

“Yep. Dang woman is worse than a warden when it comes to guarding that damn pot. I managed to get a chunk of cornbread though,” Michael said with a smile.

“Damn. I didn’t see the cornbread. She must have hid it. If dinner isn’t ready in ten minutes, I say we plan an ambush.”

“Sounds good to me,” Michael said, flipping through the channels on the television. Juju and Bud were wrestling in front of them, making it impossible to see. Joker sat with Bella on his lap, talking to Vince. The rest of the herd came barreling in the door, all talking at one time.

“How the hell do you think, much less focus on the TV?”

Michael clicked the power button in defeat. “I go to the basement.” Mrs. Sanders hollered for everyone, announcing dinnertime, which had them all pushing and shoving to get to the table. Dom and Michael stood back, watching in shock. “Hell, they are worse than hogs,” Michael groaned.

“If I thought we could get away with it, I’d say lets grab a plate and sneak to the basement.”

“Yeah, but Margaret would take our cupcakes away.”

“Mmm…good point. Let’s go fight the crocodiles before they lick the pot clean.” Dom got up, waiting for Michael to lead the way. Everyone was finding their place when Dom noticed Vice wasn’t there. He took his seat and began filling his plate, still watching for her. Just before prayer, he was about to go search for her when she walked in, looking pissed off at the world. The table was buzzing with conversation and hadn’t picked up on it, but there was no mistaking the scowl that spread across her features. Vince passed her the salad, which she only took a tiny amount. With each dish that was passed she did the same, ending with maybe a few bites of food in front of her. Normally, she ate more than Kodiak’s big ass. Something was off. When Michael led prayer, he snuck a glance at her, finding the same plagued expression.

All through dinner the group engaged in conversation like normal, except Vice. Even while he explained the upcoming deployment, she remained silent. “I want you ladies to be prepared for us to be gone longer than normal this time. There is a good chance we will end up over there for eight months or more.”

“What! Why so dang long?” Alaina complained.

“I don’t know for sure, but we have one shot to get this right. With the Feds and Homeland Security breathing down our backs, we can’t afford to come back empty handed. As it is right now, only a handful of people know what’s going on. If word gets out, we are screwed.”

“Well, I guess you guys better get over there, take the bad guys, and get home then. You have two months, three tops,” she said defiantly. The group all laughed, knowing that Alaina hated them gone and meant every word.

“Yes, ma’am, that is the plan. Just be prepared for it to be longer. I don’t want you ladies thinking something is wrong if we aren’t back in that timeframe. Which leads me to my next subject. Communication will be sparse. We will have a stable internet connection, but there will be times when it’s unsafe. Once again, don’t freak out if you don’t hear from us for long periods of time. I personally promise to get word back whenever possible. If you ladies start to panic, go shopping. Juju and Bud both need things for their cabin, and we all need a new wardrobe. When we get back, we’re all going on a vacation.” Oohs and awws erupted. “Think tropical waters and fruity drinks with umbrellas…which means you get to pick out any and all of the god awful Hawaiian shirts and board shorts your little hearts desire and we will wear them.”

“Are you serious! We are going somewhere with sandy beaches and Tiki bars?” Juju asked enthusiastically. At twenty—four, he was the baby of the group.

“Yes, I think once this is all behind us we could all use a little RR.”

“Babes in bikinis…oh yeah!” Romeo added, high-fiving his promiscuous partner in crime, Juju.

“Girls, make sure you find the most hideous clothes you can for these two idiots. We don’t need mini versions of them walking around,” Brody piped up.

“I’m sure we can find them matching pink speedos.” Violet grinned. The table burst out in laughter, triggering jokes all around. When everyone settled down, Dom took the floor once again.

  “Let’s get back
on topic. This mission is a bit different. Because of the new Intel we have, for safety purposes, I need you all here at home to make a few changes. First off, don’t go anywhere alone, and never at night unless it is an emergency. Second, keep everything locked up tight. I understand that normally we don’t have the need to lock our doors here, but for now we need to enforce it. And Third, absolutely no talking or discussing our deployment. I don’t want anyone knowing we are gone or where we are. Michael and I have already discussed security. I know I am leaning on the extreme with this all, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Any questions?”

“Can we have dessert now?” Skylar asked, lightening the mood innocently. Dom couldn’t help but grin. The boy reminded him so much of his father—a calm nature and a never-ending stomach. Jared was never one to get worked up often and had been the calm to any storm they faced. Going into this mission without him was going to be tough for the whole team.

“Yes, enough business talk. Girls, let’s see those cupcakes! Remember, Uncle Dom gets two!” Dom shot them a wink, getting giggles in return as they scurried excitedly to share their confections.
